Our documentary, Rooted, was released in April 2022. As a cinematographer and editor on the multimedia team, I am excited to record the stories and share their voices in different themed educational video series on our social media platforms including Instagram, Youtube and Website. Our film has been selected for the 2023 International Puerto Rican Heritage Film Festival.&nbsp; Logline Nurturing cultural roots is vital to preservation in the face of erasure. Synopsis Puerto Rican identity reflects a history of colonialism, consisting of native Taínos, enslaved Africans, and white colonizers. This mixture of races has led to a system of power and oppression based upon one’s proximity to whiteness. This colorism has shown itself in Loíza, causing disproportionate resource allocation and internal violence. However, familial matriarchs and female community leaders have nurtured Loíceño’s connection to their African roots, serving as a form of self-acceptance, unity, and prevention for the youth. 29-year-old Jomar Abrante expresses his roots through Bomba music as he copes with the struggles resulting from erasure and embraces the values of peace and forgiveness his mother Judith instilled in him. Female community leaders, like Modesta Irizarry and Maricruz Rivera Clemente, mirror Judith’s passion for connecting Loíceños to their roots. It is through identifying with the African cultures that make up Loíza that Loíceños can find pride in their blackness and resist erasure.&nbsp; Role I’m the cinematographer and editor on the multimedia team. During this week, each city in Aomori Prefecture showcases newly created lantern floats, each with distinct characteristics. Aomori's are human-shaped and flat (with large surface areas); Hirosaki's are fan-shaped; while Goshogawara's Tachineputa are the tallest and most impressive. Goshogawara consistently maintains three Tachineputa: the current year's new creation, last year's, and the previous year's, while dismantling the oldest one.&nbsp; At Goshogawara's annual Tachineputa Festival, smaller and medium-sized floats lead the way, followed by three massive 23-meter-tall paper lantern floats. These lanterns are carried by people of all ages - children, youth, middle-aged, and elderly people - maintaining their tradition. The parade proceeds in an orderly fashion amid rhythmic chants. The 2024 theme features “Enma”, the Buddhist King of Hell, depicting the scene where he uses a mirror to reflect and judge the deeds of the deceased. Tachineputa flourished due to Goshogawara‘s advantageous coastal trading position. The tradition had nearly vanished due to technological developments (new power lines made it difficult for tall floats to parade), war, post-war fires that destroyed design materials, the burst of the economic bubble, local economic decline, and aging population. However, in 1993, someone discovered their grandfather’s float base design drawings. By 1996, funding and technical support were secured, and volunteers reconstructed a Tachineputa. Following ancient custom, this float was burned a week after the ceremony as a tribute to precious memories (very anime-like scene!). In 1998, the city government completed the project of removing and burying power lines along the parade route. It’s remarkable how such a small city efficiently advanced urban planning for the sake of cultural preservation, reclaiming this historical practice in just five years through government efforts and local support. According to the website, the lastest three floats were designed and created by the same person, with a year-long design and production cycle. Tachineputa are built and stored in a museum. The official website reveals that visitors can typically participate in creating that year's Tachineputa. Both games demonstrate how everyday environments and personal artifacts can be used to construct deeply emotional and layered narratives.Another important reference for this project is Leanne Shapton’s memoir, Swimming Studies. In her book, Shapton looks back on her experiences as a competitive swimmer in Canada, describing not only the physical challenges of training but also the complex emotions that come with it. Reading her reflections, I was impressed by how similar these experiences feel, even across different cultures. The physical sensations, routines, and emotional struggles she describes are things I recognize from my own background. This realization shapes my approach to this project: by inviting players to piece together memories, I hope to show how individual stories can connect to a larger, shared experience, no matter where we come from. The story is about a dystopian cyberpunk future concerning the topic of surveillance.This film is produced by Yiqing Wendy Li and Xiaoran Mia Zhu. They wanted to push the idea of post creativity and experiment on how AI can challenge the traditional mass production CGI in the limited amount of time with only two people working. Concept Reimagine a future with powerful AI and surveillance, people have no privacy and secret. The story happens in this dystopian yet plausible future, Zara and Theo are a couple falling in love with the vision of fighting against surveillance. Process &amp; Roles After Yiqing and Xiaoran came up with the idea, they feed the idea to ChatGPT and generated the script. Then, Yiqing came up with prompts to generate the storytelling images in Midjourney. This audio visualizer is designed for the deaf community to better learn and understand Bomba music and their own culture. Bomba is a traditional and special music form in which the drummers give responsive feedback to the dancer. It originates from the island's history of African slavery and is now a strong part of Puerto Rican culture and people's everyday lives. I recorded this video during a trip to Loíza, Puerto Rico with my documentary class. Our film "Rooted" is a short documentary that shows the power of cultural roots like Bomba music in fighting the social injustices that the Afro-Puerto Rican community in Loíza faces. When we were on set in Loíza, our group had an interview with Giomar Cruz Latina, a community leader in Loíza. He runs a non-profit foundation that works as a multidisciplinary center called Cultura Activa PR. It is a center for the development of daily skills, where they work with the arts, education, recreation, and music as a means of social change in the different communities of Puerto Rico. He is also a teacher with a bachelor's degree in Adapted Physical Education and works with people with different kinds of disabilities. Part of his work is to teach deaf people to dance and enjoy music. This audio visualizer was inspired by one of the topics he mentioned. He believes the biggest challenge for people with functional diversity is the lack of opportunity and lack of interaction with them, which prevents them from being included in different activities. This model serves a similar function as the sign language interpreter on TV channels. It translates the vibrance of drum beats into visuals and is designed for deaf people to feel and "listen" to Bomba music in live performances and Bomba inclusive classes. The 3D African drum model is from TurboSquid, and I used TouchDesigner to build the synchronized visuals according to the audio inputs. This Processing creative coding project discusses the symbiotic relationship between image and word, and the content engages with the topic about public memory and city development. The photo content is from one of my portfolios in 2019. I visited Wenzhou and Harbin, two cities in China where my family lived in the past. I became aware of the public space's ongoing development through physically being there and hearing my father and grandmother's stories about their experiences living in the city. The portfolio I made in 2019 and the moments I captured in 2019 all become a new “memory” now. The portfolio starts with presenting blurred images only, and when users move their mouse, dispersed particles will form into a clear image with photos and contexts. This is an ongoing photography project which I started in 2018. I spend my weekends in Manhattan Chinatown or Flushing, New York, both of which are home to major Chinese-American communities. They are the blend of two distinct cultures, and have always been attractive to me. They look like any other small town in China, but have more signs with different fonts and English translations. Compared to other areas in New York, they have greater diversity and concentration of Chinese restaurants, massages, beauty salons and Asian population. Everything in Chinatown has its own distinct personality and character, in contrast to the Chinese bland metropolitan image of the cities. Here I could find a white menu on the wall with red graffiti painted below by street artists, or a Mexican fruit merchant posing to the camera. There is a kind of indescribable sense of incongruity, but also colorful, vivid, and appealing. The subject from this project ranges from merchants, to residents, apartments, posters, supermarkets and restaurants.
